While Something of the Village still Lingers

The year was 1698 when Annapolis established its first market house. Five different market houses served the locals at four different locations from 1698 to 1775. It found a permanent home at the head of City Dock in 1784. That year eight men deeded Market Space to the city under one condition: the land had to be used for a market house. What was once a sleepy fishing village has evolved into a thriving city bustling with an ever-growing number of residents and visitors who appreciate and enjoy the cultural, economic, and political fabric of historic Annapolis’ Market House.

About the Author

Ginger Doyel, a fourth-generation Annapolitan author and artist, graduated with a B.A. in Leadership Studies from the University of Richmond. She wrote an award-winning history column for The Capital newspaper. Her literary projects involved unique aspects of the heritages of Maryland; she penned the books "Annapolis Vignettes", "The Annapolitan Club: A Tradition of Hospitality Since 1897", "Gone to Market: The Annapolis Market House, 1698-2005" and "Over the Bridge: A History of Annapolis’ Eastport peninsula". Her book Annapolis Market House, While Something of the Village Still Lingers, was published posthumously December, 2023.
