Illustration of a pivotal event of the American Revolution, when in June 1777, a massive British fleet, including British regulars, Hessians, and Indians under command of General John Burgoyne, sailed down Lake Champlain to attack American colonial forces at Fort Ticonderoga, under command of General St. Clair, leading to Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga, October 17, 1777.
Commissioned for the article “In Vermont, A Valiant Stand For Freedom” by Richard Wolkomir, published in Smithsonian magazine, July 1998.
